Ozonator for swimming pools and spas

An ozonator is a device that uses ozone (O₃) to purify water in swimming pools and spas. Ozone is one of the most effective disinfectants found in nature: it eliminates bacteria, viruses, fungi and organic contaminants without leaving any chemical residues. First used in water treatment in the 19th century, it has also been used in Olympic swimming pools since the 1980s to ensure cleaner and safer water.


It works on the basis of corona discharge, a process that separates oxygen atoms in the air and recombines them into ozone molecules. The ozone is then injected into the water via a diffuser, where it rapidly oxidises impurities and microorganisms, improving the quality and clarity of the water. Here are the main advantages of the ozonator:

  • Fewer chemicals: reduces the need for chlorine and other disinfectants;
  • No unpleasant odours: breaks down chloramines, which cause red eyes and irritation;
  • Clearer water: improves water filtration and transparency;
  • Healthier environment: eliminates contaminants that can cause discomfort to bathers;
  • Environmentally friendly option: produces no residues and reduces environmental impact.


How to choose the right model

Ozone production must be proportionate to the volume of the pool or spa and the water temperature: for pools up to 25°C, a production of approximately 0.8 g/m³ is sufficient; above 33°C, approximately 1.2 g/m³ will be necessary, as the life of ozone in water decreases with increasing temperature.

There are two types of ozonators:

  • UV light: economical but with lower production;
  • Corona discharge: more powerful, ideal for pools and spas of any size.

Maintenance is minimal: simply check periodically that it is working properly and replace the device when indicated by the manufacturer.
